Pillow Care

It is important to remember that the vast majority of pillows are not machine washable.

Use a high quality pillow protector

As most pillows are not machine washable, a pillow protector is extremely important. A high quality pillow protector will be dust mite proof. There are a few ways to make a pillowcase mite proof. Our preferred method is a European process for finishing pure cotton in such a way that the pore size is simply too small for dust mites or their feces to penetrate. This is done without the use of chemicals. We offer the St. Geneve Stellmark and Crescent Moon Organic pillow protectors, both in pure cotton.

The other way to make a pillow protector mite proof is to use plastic. The St. Geneve Stellguard protector features a layer of flexible polyurethane which is both water resistant and mite proof. The surface is terry cotton, helping maintain breathability.

St. Geneve Stellmark Pillow Protector

Wash your pillow protector and pillowcase regularly

Regular washing of both the pillow protector and the pillowcase will ensure the build-up of dead skin, dust mites, oils, etc is kept to a minimum.

Wash your St. Geneve Down Pillows

Yes, St. Geneve down pillows are machine washable! How is this so when most down pillows are not? St. Geneve uses down proof cotton. This means down cannot leak out of the pillow shell. In addition, the seams are all internally finished. There is no piping on their washable pillows. This means that down cannot leak out of the seams. Washing your St. Geneve down pillow also re-lofts the pillow, making it feel as good as new again. This is the secret to keeping a pillow for 10 or 15 years!

To wash your down pillow safely, you'll need a bottle of Downwash®. If you do not have any Down Wash on hand, a pure soap will work in a pinch.

  • Remove the pillow protector before washing the pillow.
  • Machine wash one pillow at a time and only when soiled.
  • Machine wash on cold water. As the machine is filling with water add approximately 1/4 cup of Downwash®. In HE machines 1/4 is still recommended as this product is low sudsing.
  • Machine dry on medium temperatures. After each cycle check pillow for clumps and try to massage/pull apart before another drying cycle.
  • After each cycle press down on the pillow. If it still feels cold or clumpy it is not yet dry, and another drying cycle should be completed.

Complete drying may take several hours/drying cycles. It is best to start this process early in the day to ensure there is enough time to enjoy your pillow once again that same evening.

Do not wash foam pillows

Foam pillows should never be washed. This includes polyurethane, memory foam, latex, natural rubber, gel, et cetera. These materials are not intended to get wet.
