Pillows by Sleeping Position

The way you sleep has a large impact on the type of pillow which is appropriate to use. Our goal with this category is to pave the way to simplifying the pillow buying experience. We've assembled our 15 to 20 most popular pillows and arranged them by sleeping position. Read on to find out what our recommendations are.

Please remember there are no hard and fast rules when it comes to the right pillow. In fact, a pillow often times may require more consideration than a new mattress. Our guidelines found here are merely intended to point you in the right direction. As always, take the time to carefully compare your options!

Pillows designed for Side Sleepers in Canada

Generally speaking, side sleepers require the thickest pillows. A side sleeper will find the distance from their head to their mattress surface is larger than it is for back or front sleepers. Many side sleepers also want a pillow which is flexible to allow scrunching or the possibility of their arm coming up under the pillow. St. Geneve's Lajord and Ziegler Polish pillows in firm are our most popular side sleeper pillows, with Tempur-Pedic's aptly named "SidePillow" being another very popular choice. For more "robust" support consider solid latex pillows such as Natura's Ultimate or Organic Latex varieties, both of which offer a ton of support.

Back sleepers are usually seeking out a medium to thinner pillow. If a back sleeper chooses a pillow which is too thick, they may find their head begins to prop too far forward, not allowing the neck muscles to relax. This is the most common sleeping position where people tend to "overbuy" and invest in a pillow which is ironically too supportive. Our most popular back sleeper pillows tend to be the Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Cloud™, the Crescent Moon Organic Alpaca and the St. Geneve Montreux in medium or firm (remember, Montreux is a 650 loft so a firm here is like a medium in an 800 loft Lajord/Ziegler).

So you're a side and back sleeper, eh? This is always the most difficult combination. A pillow for these two vastly different positions must be inherently flexible. High quality goose down such as a St. Geneve Lajord or Ziegler in medium are great choices. Natura's Organic Dream Mate also works well as the shredded natural rubber is very fluid. Pillows which almost never work for these two uses are most solid, thicker foam pillows. Natural fill pillows (wool, alpaca, down) tend to be the most suitable choice here.

Stomach sleepers will tend to favour a thinner pillow as the amount of support required for this sleeping position is very minimal. Our most popular thinner pillows are the Crescent Moon Alpaca Organic and the St. Geneve Montreux in soft or medium. Some front sleepers may also find success in the Tempur-Pedic® Classic Pillow or even a St. Geneve Lajord in soft.
