Tempur-Pedic® mattresses may be placed into four categories. Each category differs based on the density of the TEMPUR® pressure relieving material (2.25 lb3, 4.1 lb3, 5.34 lb3 and 7 lb3). As the density of this medically proven material increases, so too does the amount of support and pressure relief. How does the pressure relief increase? As the density of TEMPUR® increases there are a greater number of small, round cells. Unlike all other foams, TEMPUR® has a tendency to move away from heat and pressure, where-as normal foams simply collapse. By moving away from heat and pressure, the cells remain round, still providing support. By moving away from your body in this manner, pressure is reduced significantly while optimal support is maintained.

As the density increases, the durability increases, as does the weight limit. Yes, Tempur-Pedic® mattresses do have a weight limit! Lighter people may not require the higher density TEMPUR material and may enjoy a softer formulated mattress such as the TEMPUR-Supreme. Heavier people are more likely to benefit from the higher density material found in The RhapsodyBed by Tempur-Pedic or The MysticBed by Tempur-Pedic.
TEMPUR® material, just like any petroleum-based foam, softens over time. By selecting a higher density we're simply reducing the amount of softening and slowing the process down.
