Mattresses Without Synthetic Flame Retardants

(9 products ) | Jump to Products ↓

There has been growing concern over the use of fire retardants in upholstered furniture and mattresses for some time. With more media focus placed on the adverse health effects that some chemicals pose to us all daily, the one place where everyone seems focused on reducing harmful toxins is within the bedroom.

Unfortunately, in Canada, mattress makers and retailers are not required to disclose whether their mattresses have been treated with flame retardants. The most significant challenge is that the vast majority of mattresses contain polyurethane foam, an extremely flammable material derived from petrochemicals.

Use caution when encountering mattress brands that advertise foams with soy or other natural oils. These are no less flammable, and the use of these natural oils in polyurethane foams has never been shown to decrease the toxicity levels of these foams.

We list in this category mattresses that use only pure sheep's wool as a 100% natural fire barrier. Wool is an excellent way to avoid using synthetic flame retardants. Each mattress in this category is guaranteed to be free of absolutely any synthetic flame-retardant treatments of any kind.

  • Organic Kids Mattress

    The Best Children's Mattress

We believe the best kids' mattress is made from breathable, temperature-regulating materials. We believe sheep's wool is the perfect material for this task. Wool is exceptionally good at regulating temperature and humidity. It is also proven to steady the heart rate and to settle children faster than synthetic fibres.

The sheep's wool in our mattresses is soft and gentle, ensuring it won't cause irritation or allergy issues. Sheep's wool is also a natural fire retardant, which means that all of our mattresses with wool are not treated with any chemical fire retardants.

    Learn more about non-allergenic wool.

Every mattress from Berkeley Ergonomics, Harrison Spinks and t•masc (Obasan) features generous helpings of wool. Berkeley Ergonomics mattresses are also available in a vegan-friendly version upon special request, where the top wool quilt is replaced with linen fibre.

  • Natural Wool Bedding in Canada

    Why Choose Natural?

We believe natural bedding, mattresses and textiles offer considerable advantages over their synthetic counterparts in several key areas:

    • Natural materials are more breathable
    • Natural materials are better at regulating temperature
    • Natural materials are superior at absorbing excess moisture (polyester only absorbs about 1% of its weight in moisture, while sheep's wool absorbs 30-40%)
    • The natural materials used in our bath towel & rugs, bedding and mattresses are non-toxic
  • Natural vs. Organic

It is essential to note that "natural" and "organic" have distinct meanings. These differences are mostly down to marketing tactics. Organic certificates are not safety certificates. It is appropriate to view all organic certificates within the scope of marketing, not health or safety.

If organic certification is important to you, please view our organic mattress collection. t•masc mattresses are made in Canada, and all materials are entirely third-party certified organic.

The Truth About Chemicals in Mattresses

The Mattress & Sleep Company recommends reading our guide on the truth about chemicals in mattresses. This in-depth article discusses several critically important topics and helps distinguish between fear-mongering, marketing, and genuine facts.

Remember, everything is a chemical. Water is a chemical (H2O). There is no such thing as a chemical-free mattress, just as there is no such thing as a chemical-free anything.
