About Mérinos d’Arles Antiques®

The Mérinos d’Arles Antiques®, Europe's finest wool, allows weavers to create warm, soft, downy blankets for winter nights and mid-season. Naturally crimped, it adds bulk for cozy duvet lovers. 

Unlike typical wools, Mérinos d’Arles Antiques® is not mechanically crimped. This superior wool is naturally crimped. Mérinos d’Arles Antiques® is unique in that the micron size of the fibres is comparable to that of cashmere. Most merino sheep's wool is approximately 24 μm, whereas Mérinos d’Arles Antiques® is approximately 17-19 μm. Fine cashmere is between 15 and 19 μm. The lower the number, the finer the fibre is.

This unique wool dates back to the days of Louis XVI in France. Merino sheep were imported and crossbred with the sheep in France, which are known for their exceptionally curly fleece. Remarkably, the qualities of fineness and curliness were retained, resulting in a unique, resilient, and springy Merino wool. Over the passage of time and due to the wars that France had been through, the qualities of this special wool were lost as sheep were bred to produce higher yields of wool.

It was several decades ago that the owners of Brun de Vian Tiran were searching for this special wool in France. They had surveyed over 1,000 sheep farms in France, remarkably, only finding the wool at one farm. These sheep still retained the original bloodlines of this special Merino wool, a piece of French culture and history, just as much as Brun de Vian Tiran themselves are. These sheep have since been bred and multiplied into around 3500 today, which produce exclusively for Brun de Vian Tiran. The finest wool in all of Europe, with remarkable resilience and natural curliness, is achieved without mechanical crimping, making this a truly special wool.

All About the Camargue Wool Duvet

The most incredible wool-filled duvet in the world.

Filled with the finest European wool, the Camargue duvet is a truly phenomenal wool duvet. Available in three fill weights to suit different preferences, climates, and bedroom temperatures. Most Canadians will be well served by the 300 gsm all-season weight for year-round use in heated bedrooms (20°C or more)/ air-conditioned homes. Or by the 500 gsm winter version for cooler bedrooms. For strict summer use or those of us who closely resemble furnaces, we would recommend the 150 gsm.

This is easily the most luxurious sheep's wool duvet available today. The density and smoothness of Brun de Vian-Tiran's wool batting is unparalleled. The Mattress & Sleep Company has never encountered anything even moderately comparable.

These duvets are made to our special dimensions, making them perfectly sized to fit St Genève duvet covers. These are typically in stock for quick shipping.

Care Instructions

It is recommended that this item be dry cleaned. Keep in mind that natural animal fibres remain odour-free and hygienic for many years, requiring minimal cleaning. This is because natural fibres do not absorb fats and oils in the way that synthetic fibres do.

Most Brun de Vian-Tiran blankets and throws may also be laundered by filling a bathtub with cool water and a specialty detergent such as Eucalan Fine Fabric Wash. Then, drain the tub and refill it with cool water once more. Remove the blanket, and then gently roll inside an absorbent bath towel to remove excess moisture. Finally, hang to air dry completely.

About Brun de Vian-Tiran

Eight generations of blanket makers in L'Isle-sur-Sorgue, France. In 1808, Charles Tiran & Laurent Vian set up a mill on the banks of the Sorgue River to prepare woollen cloth and blankets.

The company is now managed by father and son, Pierre and Jean-Louis Brun. Among highlights in the recent decades were the creation of the first Mohair blanket in 1961, which has become the company's emblem - often imitated, but never equalled.

Their unending quest for noble fibres means the range includes Alpaca, Camel, Llama, Cashmere and exceptionally rare fibres such as Cashgora and Yangir.

This is by far the best wool duvet. Very soft and worm.

This is by far the best wool duvet I’ve ever had here in Canada.

Love this duvet!

We were looking for a replacement for our down duvet; we decided to go with wool instead of down. After researching different brands available in Canada, we decided on this one - partly because coincidentally, we had been in France the year before & stayed a week in the very village that the duvet company originates from. It was our first trip to France, and we came away with the impression that the French take pride in making beautiful, quality items - be it wine, food, or items like this, especially if this company has been in existence since 1808! I was pretty sure this duvet was going to be fantastic quality & it totally is! Having never owned a wool duvet before, I thought it might be really thin, but it's a very nice thickness & just feels like a warm hug all over. As soon as we get into bed & pull it over us - instant wamth! It warms you as soon as you pull it over yourself, yet does not become too warm - it really does do the temperature regulation thing. We made the right choice & absolutely love this duvet!

This is my third wool duvet from Mattress and Sleep Company and even though I was satisfied with the previous duvets *1 Natura, 1 Sleepte*, I can say with 100% certainty that this duvet is in a whole different league! I am not even sure how to put it into words. If you want a wool duvet, this is the one to get. It's not even a close comparison.

In love with this duvet!!! Perfect weight for West Coast weather. Can't wait to get to bed and snuggle in for the night. The only drawback is I don't want to get up in the morning and leave the cozy nest it creates. Highly recommend - worth every penny!

Wow! Really a wow! Very light comparing to the fill! Really good quality! We are living in a house and we don't like too much warmth in the room ,but to be well covered while sleeping! All worthy the money! The duvet keeps the temperature constant. No hot no cold. And more than this it is light, cuddling, comes around you, wrapping not pulling the cover of the other sleeping besides.. We love it!!! We were concerned it is going to be too thick and too heavy, but it is not!!! Just perfect for our bed. Bonjour, la France ,merci beaucoup la France! And what a great idea for the store to import these products. Now we plan to buy a mattress pad from the same company. In the winter it will be a good addition and such a blessing!!!

Is this machine washable?

These are not machine washable. Wool is naturally self cleaning and very resistant to bacteria and dust mites living in it. With regular laundering of your duvet cover these should not require cleaning. They can be sanitized by being put in a dryer on medium heat for a short cycle.
