A quality box spring is a crucial component of a good night's rest. While most foundations are rigid boxes placed beneath the mattress, a genuine box spring (Harrison Spinks) or suspension foundation (Berkeley Ergonomics, standalone or in a TEAM 7 wood bedframe) is designed to enhance the comfort, support, and pressure relief of any mattress. d

We recommend reading our box spring & platform bed guide. In this guide, you'll find detailed information on the function a boxspring serves, and an entire section devoted to platform-style bed support systems.

Investing in a quality mattress support system is one of the best ways to ensure long-term enjoyment of your new mattress

Types of Mattress Supports

  • 9" height T3000 foundation wrapped in organic cotton. Shown here in our Sherwood Park location

    Standard Box Spring

    • Ironically, the vast majority of box springs have no springs and are simply a rigid platform
    • Typically between 5-9" tall and designed to be supported by a bed frame. The common types of bed frames that support a box spring include traditional metal frames with legs or wheels, or headboards and footboards with an integrated frame
    • Some box springs offer legs, which removes the need for a bed frame to support the box spring. Our Harrison Spinks True Edge Foundation is one such example. The Harrison Spinks foundation is also a functional box spring with thousands of micro pocket coils

    Platform Bed

    • This style of bed frame is intended to remove the need for a box spring
    • The platform is usually slatted wood
    • It is critical to ensure the slats are strongly constructed and not spaced too far apart. The Mattress & Sleep Company encounters poorly designed slatted platform beds daily. If the slats are too far apart, your mattress will not be adequately supported
    • Please read our box spring & platform bed guide for more details on selecting a well-designed platform bed

    Adjustable Bed

    • Adjustable beds bend and tilt, allowing the mattress to articulate into varying angles and positions. This provides the option to sit up in bed for health reasons, reading, watching TV and much more
    • The types of possible movements include pillow-tilt, lumbar, head, foot, flat & fully tilted, and even full platform height adjustments
    • Adjustable beds are typically electrically adjusted, although manually tilted slatted adjustable beds also exist
    • Adjustable beds replace traditional box springs and typically include adjustable legs. Many adjustable beds also fit into bed frames with headboards and footboards
    • There is a growing category of adjustable beds in a low-profile design intended for use on platform beds. Our Ergomotion Ebreza is an excellent example of such a product
