Mattress Protectors 101

Since a good quality mattress will last you 10+ years, it is imperative that a mattress protector is used to ensure it is in good condition for the long term. Many mattress protectors from big box retailers are made of polyester and may have claims to be breathable and waterproof. The trouble with polyester is that while it may keep your mattress in good condition, it can feel like you are sleeping on vinyl which can lead to excessive sweating and waking up too hot. A good quality mattress protector will keep you dry and comfortable and keep the mattress in good condition for the long run.

One of our most popular mattress protectors is the St. Dormeir by St Geneve. It is a cotton terry cloth with wool quilted on the inside. Since wool can absorb up to 30% of its weight in moisture, it keeps you cool and dry, while also protecting the mattress from absorbing perspiration.

Another great option is the Green Sleep Vasilo. This jersey stretch knit organic cotton fabric is very thick and stretchy, making it one of the most absorbent and durable mattress protectors available. Both the Vasilo and Dormeir can go in the washer and dryer.

While neither option is waterproof, if you truly want the most breathable option for waterproofing, you can always add a Natura Puddle Pad on top of either protector for children’s mattresses, incontinence, pets, etc. It’s better to be safe than sorry when it comes to the care of your mattress!
