We're huge fans of alpaca wool fibre. This is one of the best natural fibres on the planet, and alpacas are just super cool animals to top it off. For those that want the warmth and humidity control of wool which provides a very broad comfort range but with a luxurious drape and density closer in feel to that of a silk fill duvet. These are true luxury duvets, using a very high grade of fleece, 100% white long staple, and lightweight, breathable percale organic cotton fabric produced in Germany.

Handmade to our exact specification in Peru, The Mattress & Sleep Company's collection of alpaca duvets, pillows and mattress toppers are wonderful additions to your healthy bedroom.

Highly Breathable and Naturally Temperature Regulating. Alpaca fibres are hollow. This is an important distinction amongst all fibres whether natural or synthetic. A fibre with more hollow space offers a superior ability to regulate temperature and humidity.

Even when compared to merino sheep's wool, alpaca fibres offer some key advantages:

  • While merino wool and alpaca are hollow tubule structures, sheep's wool has an outer scaling and is typically crimped which adds some loft to the fibre, alpaca does not have this scaling/crimp which makes it smoother and more silk-like in structure
  • Alpaca has a denser and firmer feel than sheep's wool for use in pillows and mattress pads, less gaps between the fibres due to less loft means a firmer overall comfort and less compaction.
  • The density of alpaca produces a duvet which drapes over the body more intimately than a wool duvet, the feeling is closer to that of a silk duvet.
  • Alpaca wool is stronger than merino wool even when comparing two fibres of similar characteristics (length, diameter, etc).

Healthy and Hypoallergenic. Alpaca wool naturally creates a comfortable, dry sleep environment decreasing the likelihood of common allergens such as dust mites, bacteria, and fungus. The low lanolin content of carefully cleaned alpaca fibres is generally understood to meet the definition of hypoallergenic. Alpaca is free of lanolin grease.

The alpaca fibres are cleaned with organically certified detergents and processed without the use of harsh chemicals.

Care Instructions

Alpaca fibre is a marvellously hygienic natural fibre. Alpaca fibre is self-cleaning and does not absorb any extraneous odours. Therefore, it is usually sufficient to air the comforter sporadically. If washing the duvet is necessary, for instance, due to spillages, this should be done by a professional cleaner. Not to be washed in a machine, spot clean only. Use a duvet cover that can be washed regularly.
